A small industry of AI content detectors answers that need. This is an independent look at the best of them in 2026, what each is genuinely good at, and the honest limits they all share.

The honest caveat first
No detector is a lie detector. Every tool here produces false positives (flagging human writing as AI) and false negatives (missing AI text), particularly when text has been edited or paraphrased. Independent testers consistently show accuracy swinging with the type of content. So the right mental model is a smoke alarm, not a court verdict: a signal worth investigating, never a final judgement — especially where someone’s grade or job is at stake.
What we measured ourselves
The caveat above is the standard paragraph in every detector round-up, including the ones ranking above this page. So we tested whether it holds.
We built a corpus of 18 texts of about 170 words each — six per language, in English, Polish and German. Half were written by a language model: they are excerpts from articles published on this site, so we know exactly how they were produced. The other half are human-written, taken from Wikipedia revisions saved before June 2020, well before the current generation of models existed. On 28 July 2026 we ran all 18 through ZeroGPT’s free detector and recorded the raw “AI %” it returned, counting 50% or above as a verdict of “AI”.

Overall it got 6 of 18 right — worse than a coin toss on a two-way question.
The language split is the part worth dwelling on. For Polish and German the detector returned exactly 0.0% on every single machine-written text: not “uncertain”, but a confident verdict of “Human Written”. At the same time it rated genuine human Polish encyclopaedia entries at an average of 74% AI, and one of them — an article about lighthouses, edited years before ChatGPT existed — at 100%. For Polish the tool was not merely unreliable; it was closer to inverted, scoring human prose as more machine-like than actual machine prose.
This is one detector, on a free tier, on a small sample, and the paid tools may well do better — we could not test those without buying accounts, and we are not going to claim results we did not measure. But it settles the practical question. A tool that clears every AI text in your language while accusing a Wikipedia entry cannot carry a decision about a student, an employee or a supplier.

How to actually use a detector well
- Use it as one input. Combine the score with context: deadlines, the writer’s track record, the document’s history.
- Confirm with a second tool. Disagreement between two reputable detectors is itself information.
- Mind false positives. Non-native English and heavily-edited human writing are flagged more often. Build that into your policy.
- Don’t automate consequences. Never let a detector alone fail a student or reject a hire. It informs a human decision; it doesn’t make it.
